class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When we need to <strong>structure or re-structure teams<\/strong> in our organizations, we often ignore fundamental rules about how humans and systems interact.<\/p><p id=\"ember42\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Over the summer, I read several books that reminded me that there are <strong>simple yet powerful principles<\/strong> guiding how we design and transform teams.<\/p><p id=\"ember43\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 When we ignore these laws, the <strong>flow of value gets blocked<\/strong>. \ud83d\udc49 When we respect them, organizations have a much greater chance of unlocking <strong>incredible outcomes<\/strong>.<\/p><p id=\"ember44\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Here are some of the most impactful principles I keep in mind when working with stable, trusting relationships they can maintain.<\/p><ul><li>Around <strong>15 people<\/strong> for deep trust.<\/li><li>Around <strong>5 people<\/strong> for very close trust.<\/li><\/ul><p id=\"ember54\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This explains why the <strong>optimal size for high-performing teams<\/strong> is typically <strong>7\u20139 members<\/strong>. Teams need to be small enough for effective collaboration, but large enough to deliver.<\/p><p id=\"ember55\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\ud83d\udca1 Amazon popularized this with their \u201c<strong>two-pizza rule<\/strong>\u201d: if two pizzas can\u2019t feed the team, it\u2019s too big.<\/p><hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9461601 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9461601\" fundamental task itself (e.g., learning a programming language).<\/li><li><strong>Extraneous cognitive load<\/strong> \u2192 from the environment (e.g., setting up a testing environment).<\/li><li><strong>Germane cognitive load<\/strong> \u2192 from aspects requiring special attention for learning or high performance (e.g., mastering a business domain).<\/li><\/ul><p id=\"ember60\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A well-designed team setup balances these loads, so teams can focus their energy on <strong>delivering value rather than fighting As <strong>change agents<\/strong>, <strong>coaches <\/strong>or leaders, it is our job to <strong>consciously design teams<\/strong>, rather than leaving outcomes to chance.<\/p><p id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In this era, we have the opportunity to use <strong>AI <\/strong>to <strong>minimise intrinsic and extraneous<\/strong> cognitive load by automating repetitive tasks and creating stable environments for testing in minutes, among many other possibilities. The result is a greater <strong>focus <\/strong>on the value-creating and learning aspects of work by teams.<\/p><p id=\"ember65\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\ud83d\udca1 If
